Gladys S. Johnson, age 109 years, of Elroy, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Heritage Manor in Elroy.
She was born on January 5, 1908 to William and Minnie (Peterson) Hines in Elroy. Gladys graduated from the Elroy High School in 1926, Juneau County Normal School and La Crosse State College. Gladys was united in marriage to Theodore E. Johnson on November 27, 1934. They farmed for several years and then moved into Elroy. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1981.
Gladys was a school teacher for 31 years: teaching at Plainview, Knickerbocker, and Fowler country schools and for many years at the Elroy Grade School.
She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and the Esther Circle, Juneau County Retired Educators and the Cancer Society of Juneau County.
Gladys enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. She was a very positive and active person who enjoyed helping others. She participated with quilt making for Lutherans and World Relief and also delighted in making ceramics, reading and word search puzzles.
Survivors include her daughters, Joan Buss of Stoughton and Karen Monskey of Plymouth, Minnesota; grandchildren, Katherine Vandenhouten, Kari (Randy) Roneid, Kelly Buss, William (Erica) Buss, Wayne Buss, Lori (Jon) Goetz, Larry (Anna) Monskey, Lanay Ferguson, Lee (Cindy) Monskey and Paul (Nikki) Monskey; 18 Great Grandchildren and 4 Great Great Grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Theodore; she was preceded in death by her sisters, Lenore Lange and Avis Klinker and brothers, Kenneth and George Hines.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Elroy. Burial will be in the Fountain Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kendall. Friends may call at the Church on Saturday, August 19th from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The Picha Funeral Home in Elroy is assisting with arrangements.
