Lloyd Byington Obituary

Lloyd A. Byington, age 92 years, of Wonewoc, Wisconsin, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2024 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, surrounded by his family.

He was born on February 6, 1932, the son of Fred and Helen (Rollins) Byington in Wonewoc and he graduated from the Wonewoc High School in 1950.

Lloyd served in the U.S. Army, joining the 32nd Infantry Division in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1954.  He later served several years in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Lloyd was united in marriage to Sally Dettman on January 15, 1966 at the United Methodist Church in Wonewoc.

He was very active in the Wonewoc community.  Lloyd began working at the State Bank of Wonewoc in 1960 as a Cashier and worked his way to becoming President.  He retired in 1998. He served on the Wonewoc School Board, United Methodist Church Board, and was a member of the American Legion Clark-Gurgel Post in Wonewoc for many years.

The activities that Lloyd was most passionate about revolved around his grandkids, vehicles, and animals.  In his younger years, he could be found tooling around in his '57 Corvette, or flying in his plane.  He took great pride in the building of the wooden boat with his dad, and shared those memories with us in his final days.

On the hobby farm, he could be seen on the tractor, baling hay to feed the Herefords, or on the lawn tractor mowing the ever-expanding yard.  Then came Lloyd's many years of driving his Zor Shriner Midget Car in parades. Grandpa's midget car, the ATV rides, and snowmobile rides all created lifelong memories with his grandkids.  He was so proud of "The Palace" renovation, and enjoyed sharing that space with his kids, grandkids, and 'Lloyd's Boys'. And the memories formed around Lake Pipetoohigh at Silver Springs Farm are too numerous to count (as are the fish that still reside there!).  But you could always count on the fish needing to be fed when coming to the farm, as well as many other wild animals.

In recent years, Lloyd enjoyed taking leisurely rides in the convertible, and shining up the Cadillac for special occasions.  The lawn continued to expand, so the time spent on the lawn tractor increased as well. Whether it was relating to a car, an ATV, a snowmobile, or a tractor, the pond or the palace, each of us have stories and memories that we will carry throughout our lives, someday sharing them with our grandchildren as well.  Lloyd's oldest grandson Brad sums up his amazing life quite well:  "Grandpa Lloyd taught me to go for it, to get after it, and to always watch out for back stabbers.  He was my first salute.  He was a good man. His lessons and memories will always be with me."

Survivors include his wife, Sally Byington of Wonewoc; son, Mike (Tammy) Byington of La Crosse; daughter, Heather Richmond of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Bradley (Ashlee) Byington, Breanna (Maxwell) Fritz, Brodyn Byington (special friend, Laura), Max Byington, Mallory (Rob) Flogel and Isabella Richmond; great grandchildren, Jade Cresswell, Cora Byington and Mara Fritz; and sisters-in-law, Janice Byington and Chris Dittman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Helen Byington; in-laws, Harold and Rosella Dettman; son-in-law, Larry Richmond and brothers, Norman Byington and Casey (Denese) Byington.
